The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC. It is one of history's most famous military engagements and one of the earliest recorded battles. The victory over Persian fighters gave Greeks a sense of accomplishment and instilled a feeling of belief in their continued existence. It was an epic victory for freedom and gave the Greeks momentum to fight on. For this reason, the battle is considered a defining moment in the development of European culture.
