The Compromise of 1877 marked the end of the Reconstruction Era. With this event, the prevalence of the civil and political rights of African Americans was left in great uncertainty. Southern states legislatures passed a series of segregationist laws which declared the physical separation between whites and persons of color in schools, parks, and public transportation, among others. These statues governed the south throughout the first half of the 20th century until the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement of 1960.
