This type of geological process is volcanism. It is considered catastrophic because volcanos lead to the release of gases, death of plants and animals and can even cause tsunamis.

For example, large number of gases and other substances are released to the atmosphere during the eruption. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) can reflect solar radiation and thus lead to the cooling of the lower atmosphere.

In combination with high temperatures, the toxicity of some gases and falling debris it can lead to the death of plants and animals.
