Japan was a primarily agriculture country for about 400,000 years. The Nara period ran in the 700's AD and was influenced by China. The form of ruling had been heredity and the religion was worship of spirits. After China began to conquer parts of Korea, the leader of Japan, Shotoku, sent spies to find out the threat and then tried to adapt the ways of the Chinese. The small villages social units, territories of Japan were divided like the Chinese, laws and Buddhism were both adopted. The higher classes adapted the fashion and Buddihism the most. After his death the capital was moved to Nara and the country had rulers that were hereditary and not from talent and so their form of government did not progress the same way the Chinese Government did.
