There are many things that define a culture, including art, music and other crafts. But one in particular that added to the culture of Delaware was newspapers. In 1761, James Adams traveled to Wilmington, Delaware after leaving Philadelphia. Adams set up the first printing press in the Lower Counties of Delaware. The following year, Adams announced his intention to publish a newspaper, the Wilmington Courant, but no copies are known to exist today, and some think that the paper never actually made it to the printing press. The first paper to be authenticated was the Delaware Gazette in 1785 by Jacob Killen and was published in Wilmington. It is speculated that around one-third of all the titles of works printed in Delaware in the eighteenth century came from James Adams’ printing press. The reason for this? Adams had little to no local competition, and remained active for about thirty years.
