What is a system of checks and balances? How does it protect people of this country?

Keeps people from going broke

Checks and balances, or the separation of powers. In this system the government was to be divided into three branches of government, each branch having particular powers. This is done so we keep them balanced and to prevent one branch from ever gaining too much power which could give them the power to shut down sites and stores without permission from the other branches.
