The Romans destroyed the Second Temple during the siege of Jerusalem that was led by the future Emperor Titus and his second-in-command Tiberius Julius Alexander. The Romans began their siege of the city before the Passover. They succeeded after some failed attempts by attacking the sleeping zealot soldiers. When the defenders manage to kill some Roman soldiers, they sent a negotiators but the defenders shot him with an arrow. The Romans erected ramparts and started using battering rams on the temple walls but due to the fighting, a fire had started from the fighting and Romans added more fuel to the fire. The fire spread and the Temple was burned as well some residential areas. The remaining pockets of resistance fled and Jerusalem was destroyed.
