How are Political Parties and Interest Groups different?

    Interest groups seek to influence public policy and they are private organizations that focus on very specific issues, while Political parties are public organizations that have views on a wide range of issues.

    Political parties run candidates for office and coordinate activities of elected officials. While Iterest groups also electioneer, they do not run candidates.

    Political parties nominate candidates for public office and try to achieve the goals of their party through legislation and program initiatives. Whereas, Interest groups do not nominate candidates for public office, although they may support them politically.

    Political parties organize political campaigns to win public office for those they nominate. Whereas, Interest groups often contribute dollars to their campaign.

    Political Parties provide clear choices to the electorates. Whereas, Interest groups do not provide clear choices and do not run candidates.
