    This is an example of degradation ceremony.

    The group has gathered to decide what they want to do with the individual. They decide that he or she is not worthy of being a member anymore, which means that they are degrading his rank within the group (or in this case, expelling him or her).

    The term was coined by sociologist Harold Garfinkel in 1956 in his essay "Conditions of Successful Degradation Ceremonies."
