Which describes religion as a social institution? Religious groups do not believe members should be punished for breaking rules. Every religion has a moral code for how people should behave. Everyone in the United States belongs to a religious group. Religious groups share the same, or very similar, values and rules.

Religious rituals serve a great function of gathering of people, and empowering their beliefs, which is why religions have a cohesive function in a society. This is why religion takes up an important part of every nation and society.
