Describe the factors both promoting and limiting religious freedom in the New England and Chesapeake colonies.

New England was mainly established for religious reasons. There were the separatists wanted to create their own church separate from state and the puritans who wanted to purify the church of England. They believed that religious uniformity was essential to social order and if they focused on one's self it would affect community stability. The church and government were interconnected.

By 1600 the idea that certain rights of Englishmen applied to all within the kingdom, developed like traditional definition of liberties. Chesapeake bay: calvert wanted maryland as haven for coexistence between catholics and protestants; puritanism looked down on natural liberty + death penalty for worshipping in conflict with Puritanism for Mass. bay, Puritan church and state intertwined; rhode island: haven for non-puritans + no religious requirement for voting; hartford: no need to be a church member to vote; new haven: very close ties between church and state.
