This can be either contour plowing or terracing. Contour plowing is used in developed countries on hills that are not so steep that a plow cannot be driven on them. Terracing is an ancient, traditional practice of utilizing land on very steep slopes that would otherwise not be abke to support agriculture. Beautiful terraced rice paddies can be found in China and Thailand.
