In a pedigree a vertical Line and a bracket connect what

    A pedigree chart shows ancestral levels. A vertical line means that the fore element is related to the preceding element. Most likely, it is that element's son/daughter. Now, if the parent bore a more than one child that mean a bracket is used in order to show the relationship of the siblings.
