The RBC or Erythrocytes are permeable to water so the water flows inside and outside of the RBC. Usually, the concentration of solute in the cell is higher than the external environment therefore the water will move inside the cell.

When a cell is placed in the distilled water then the water will move from the higher potential to lower potential that is inside the cell and the cell will swell or the volume of the cell increases.
