A proto-oncogene is critical for a cell to respond to an external signal to divide. What would happen to a cell that sustains an inactivating mutation in this proto-oncogene?

    The cell becomes oncogene, which is the gene that will make the cell cancerous.

    The proto-oncogenes are normal cells, which are the original unmutated wild type alleles of oncogenes.

    The proto - oncogenes are found within the DNA and they control cell division. Their mutation cause a situation whereby the genes can no longer regulate cell division and the cell may grow into a tumor.
