Student has X amount of $1 bills and Y amount of $5 bills. At the same time, it is equal to $44 and 16 in terms of quantity. We can make an equation:

$1*X + $5*Y = $44 AND X+Y=16 ⇒ X=16-Y

16-Y+5Y=44

16+4Y=44

4Y=28

Y=7

X=16-Y=16-7=9

So, 9 bills of $1 and 7 bills of $5
