Jane, 14, is in 8th grade and lives with her mom, Mary, who is a disabled veteran, and her father, Frank, who is also disabled. They live in a trailer in the woods, which has electricity, water, and plumbing but is just barely habitable. Jane's school filed a truancy petition because she has already missed 8 days of school and it is only November. When asked why Jane missed school, she replied that she needed to stay with her mother, who had suffered a recent stroke, while her father was undergoing chemotherapy. Jane said there was no one else who could take care of her mother." Describe what you would do if you were the human services professional in charge of this case.

Jane's parents need assistance at home. It is imperative in her case to seek home care services aid so her parents can receive proper nursery care. It is important also to verify under what conditions the family is living since there are water and power service in the place where they live but it seems the house is not suitable for them because of Jane's parent's medical conditions. Health care insurance and food aid (food stamps) are likely to be needed for the three of them as well. Also, it is more than justifiable that Jane has been absent from school because of everything that has been going on at home so her truancy petition could be accepted.
