In the children's story "Boba Rebear and Salty Green Paper" Ying Ying is a little boy who doesn't speak English. He desperately needs open heart surgery and needs to learn to speak a little English per the doctors. His parents enrolled him into a preschool so he could learn.

Ying Ying was very scared of preschool and cried and screamed his first few days there. Instead of making the children sit with their legs "criss cross applesauce" and be calm, the teachers let the children express themselves.

After a few days, Malika got up, during her turn, at circle time and started singing and dancing. This made Ying Ying stop crying finally and he started laughing until he cried with happiness. That was the day he fell in love with Malika.
