When Dmitri Mendeleev published his periodic table of the elements in 1869, there were 59 known elements. Today there are 118 known elements. Mendeleev's periodic table, despite the increase in the number of discovered elements, maintains much of its original structure. Summarize one feature of Mendeleev's periodic table design that made it possible to accommodate new elements.

    Mendeleev's solution was to group elements that shared similar properties, after the table was revised according to atomic number, newly discovered elements fell into place.
