The crisis of annulment or the crisis of secession from 1828 to 1832 merged the struggles of political factions with disagreements on import and export tariffs. Opponents of what came to be known as the "Tariff of Abominations" (rates of abominable), rates of 62% that were applied to 92% of all imports, fought what they saw an injustice against the southern states from the country. Since the northern states produced many of the resources and the south depended on imports, tariffs only affected the southern half of the country, since these states had an economic system based on agriculture.
