At first, the Europeans were looking for a new way to get to India to trade, so they didn't have to take the silk road, but they found the Americas instead of India. They started to colonize more and more lands, because they realized that each land had a valuable resources that the Europeans could trade and use to make more money, therefore making them a more powerful country.
