What role did william the conquerer play in the development of a national identity for england

    William showed much interest in learning about the new lands and his people. It was recorded in the Domesday book. However, he could not read nor write and he never learned English. He used many French and Latin words that became part of the mixed language known as Franglais. Many words became part of the English dictionary.
