    The Olmec and the Purepecha cultures were the major civilizations of ancient America.

    The Olmec culture flourished from 1200 BCE till 400 BCE. This was the first civilization to invent and use a writing system. Their art and stone work sculpting became popular in the neighbouring regions.

    The Purepecha culture survived from 1100 CE to 1530 CE. The people of Purepecha culture were known to be warriors and remained unconquered during their glorious years. They conquered lands from the Aztecs.

    The Inca empire was centred in Peru and ruled the west coast of Southern America. Its rule lasted from 1400 till 1532. It had complex society and government but didn't had wheels, iron tools and writing system. The Inca emperor was known as Sapa Inca and the first ruler was Manco Capac. At its height its estimated population was more then ten million people.

    The Mayas ruled the region of present day southern Mexico and mesoamerica. Their cities were dotted with stone structures and the civilisation had begun 2000 years ago, it lasted for more than 3000 years. Mayas were the only American civilisation which developed written language.
