Explanation:

Catastrophism stems from the theory that the Earth as we see it today was mainly as a result of abrupt/sudden violent events which happened on a worldwide scale. Catastrophism is opposed to uniformitarianism, also known as gradualism which holds that the earth was shaped by slow (not sudden and violent) changes such as in the form of erosion are the causes of present day earth and it's geological features.
