During the American Revolutionary War, the Loyalists were people who stayed loyal to the British Crown. They also received the name of Tories or Royalists. Although some people continued to support Britain after the war broke out, the numbers were much smaller than Great Britain had anticipated, causing a serious problem for the country. Moreover, Loyalists were not always fully trusted, as they were suspected of being spies for the "Patriots" (the other side of the war; Americans who supported independence).
