Although classified as a secular state, the United States government guarantees religious freedom for every citizen. The legal basis for religious freedom in the United States is listed in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. [2] According to a 2014 Pew Research Center report, the majority of the population of the United States is Christian with a percentage of 70.6%. Christians in the United States consist of various denominations. Most of the Christians in the United States are Protestants with a percentage reaching 46.5% of the total population of the United States. There are also Catholics who make up 20.8% of the total population of the United States. There is a small community of Orthodox Christian congregations brought by immigrants from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

    Judaism is the largest non-Christian religion in the United States with a percentage of 1.9% of the total US population. Although belonging to a religious and ethnic minority, many American Jewish ethnicities play an important role in the United States. Many Jewish-American descendants work in the political-government sphere and become successful business people in the United States. [3] The second largest non-Christian religion after Judaism in the United States is Islam. There are as many as 0.9% of Muslims in the United States. Adherents of dharmic religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism in the United States are mostly brought by immigrants from South and East Asia. People who are not affiliated with a particular religion in the United States have a large following. As many as 22.8% of the United States population claim to be atheists or agnosticism. [4]

    In the last decade, the number of adherents of religion in the United States has decreased. This decrease is especially true for adherents of Christianity both from Protestant Christians, Catholics, and other Christian sects. But on the contrary, the number of non-religious people in the United States tends to increase. According to research by the Pew Research Center there was an increase of 6.7% of non-religious people in the period 2007 to 2014. [5] The Muslim population in the United States has tended to grow even since the September 11, 2001 attacks. [6] It is estimated that by 2050 the number of Muslims in the United States will exceed the number of Jews. [7] Of the 50 states in the United States and 1 federal district, Mississippi is the most religious state with a percentage of 59% of the population included in the category of highly religious. The second ranking is occupied by the state of Alabama with a percentage of 56% of the population belonging to the very religious category. Whereas Utah, which is the state with the largest population of mormon followers, has 54% of the population belonging to the very religious category. [8]
