    The Loma Prieta earthquake, also known as the '89 earthquake and the World Series earthquake, occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area of California on Tuesday, October 17, 1989 at 17:04. Caused by a landslide in the San Andres Fault, the earthquake lasted approximately 15 seconds and marked 6.9 on the seismological scale of the magnitude of the moment (the magnitude of the surface wave measured 7.1). 63 people died in the earthquake. Northern California, 3,757 people were injured and between 8,0004 and 12,000 people were left homeless.

    The earthquake occurred during the warm-up for the third game of the 1989 World Series, which coincidentally featured both teams from the Baseball Major League Bay Area, the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants.

    This earthquake was the first in the United States that was broadcast on live television.
