During the war of 1812, Andrew Jackson decided that he would clear the Mississippi Territory for white settlement. After the election as Andrew Jackson as president in 1828, the white settlers declared that India where subject to the constitution but the Creeks took the matter to court with the argument that they were an independent nation.

Chief Justice Marshall who headed the case declared that the state of Georgia had no authority over the Cherokee stating that they were only subject to the authority of the federal government. President Jackson refused the ruling and pursued a policy of Indian removal. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 allowed for the relocation of Native American tribes to the lands west of the Mississippi River but some government officials abused the law and forcefully removed the Creeks.

Although often treated as a minor footnote to the bloody European war between France and Britain, the War of 1812 was crucial for the United States. First, it effectively destroyed the Indians' ability to resist American expansion east of the Mississippi River.

The main result of the war was two centuries of peace with each other. All causes of the war had disappeared with the end of the war between Britain and France and the destruction of the power of Native Americans to block American expansion into the Northwest.

The War of 1812 ended when Great Britain and the United States of America signed the Treaty of Ghent on December 24th, 1814. The treaty said that each country would have their borders made the same as they were before the war. So, neither Britain or the U. S. gained any territory from each other.
