    The end of the Cuban war followed the destruction of the last major Spanish fleet which was taken down at the battle of Santiago. The Battle of Santiago de Cuba happened on July 3, 1898 between the United States Navy and the Spanish. It sealed the victory for America as well as won Cuba its independence from Spain.
