    The formula for the perimeter of rectangle is 2 times the length plus 2 times the width

    2L x 2W

    Since the perimeter is 34, 2L x 2W = 34

    Also, since the length is 5 more than, or 5 added to the width (5 + W), Length = 5 + Width

    If you put it in

    2 (5+W) + 2W=34

    10 + 2W + 2W=34

    10 + 4W = 34

    4W = 34 (-10)

    4W = 24

    W = 24/4

    W=6

    L=W+5

    L=5+6

    L=11

    W = 6, L=11

    2W + 2L = 34

    2W + 2 (2W+5)

    2W + 4W + 10 = 34

    Add the Ws:

    6W + 10 = 34

    Subtract 10 from each side:

    6W = 24

    W = 4
