The asteroid that hit landed just of the Yucatan Peninsula off the coast of Mexico. The extinction of the dinosaurs paved the way for mammals as ecological niches were now left empty. The asteroid flung tons of gas and dust into the atmosphere and this blocked the sun and cooled the earth. The lack of sunlight affected plants which from the basis of all food chains.
