Scientists use spectrography to determine the chemical composition of a star. The short version is that as light bounces off of atoms, different atoms will absorb different wavelengths of light. So by using a spectrograph, scientists can view each spectrum of light coming from a star, and determine the composition based off of the dark areas in the spectrograph.
