    According to his autobiography 'Narrative of James Curry, A Fugitive Slave' published in 1840, James Curry was born and spent his early life in North Carolina as a slave. He had undertaken the first attempt to escape when at the age of twenty. It happened after Curry secretly married a free black woman in June 14, 1837. Already from July to December he was sheltered and employed by Quakers in the free state of Pennsylvania. Specifically in Philadelphia. Later on he proceeded to Canada and have sent for his wife.
