The pre-operational stage is characterized by egocentric thought. This is the second stage and lasts from about age two until age seven. The child is learning to speak, but cannot yet think abstractly and use logic. The child in this stage focuses primarily on themselves and has a hard time taking the perspective of others. The child assumes that others view the world in the same way that they do.
