I believe the answer is: the findings in Milgram's authority experiment.

Millgram's authority experiment concluded that people in general had the tendency to follow every orders from the person that they acknowledged as a leader. The conformity that displayed is still very strong even if those people genuinely have conflicting principles/opinion regarding the order.
